I offer on-line and in person tutoring specifically for children with dyslexia and/or dysgraphia. The methods used to teach struggling readers and writers work for virtually everyone but are essential for kids with dyslexia and dysgraphia. Many traditional instructional approaches used in schools simply do not work that well. In addition, kids with dyslexia benefit from one on one support and lessons customized to thier needs.
I follow a structured literacy approach to instruciton as recommended by the International Dyslexia Association. The instruction includes all aspects of literacy as shown on the Reading Rope graphic developed by Dr. Hollis Scarborough.
Learning to read is not natural, and the brain must create new neural networks connecting different parts of the left side of the brain. However, the dyslexic brain is structured in a way that makes learning to read very difficult. A good dyslexia intervention actually re-wires the brain so that the child reads more like a skilled reader as shown in the image below. After therapy the brain will show more activation in the different parts of the brain involved in skilled reading. My goal for every student is to help wire their brain for reading.
