What is Dyslexia Therapy as a CALT?

Many different organizations offer certification to be a dyslexia practitioner, and some offer courses as short as one day. A CALT’s training is more extensive than many other training options.

The Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) certifies academic language therapists. A Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) has completed accredited courses of study usually lasting two to three years that includes hands-on experiences under supervision. A CALT learns the logic and structure of the English language systems. A deep understanding of language informs their instruction because at its heart, dyslexia is a problem with language. They know how to deliver structured language instruction using simultaneous multisensory teaching strategies.

CALT’s use a variety of tools such as Alphabetic Phonics, Scientific Spelling, and Multi-sensory Grammar among many others during their tutoring therapy sessions. They know how to customize a lesson for each child and understand the brain processes behind language learning.
